Getting to Sand Dunes OHV Parking Area (Race Start/Finish)

Approximate drive time from Rock Springs is an hour and from Lander is 2.75 hours. Depending on weather and road conditions, all-wheel drive is recommended. Make sure to bring layers, food and water, and plenty of gas whenever venturing into the desert.

From Rock Springs: Approximate travel time is one hour

From Rock Springs, travel north on U.S. 191. Approximately 10 miles north of Rock Springs, turn right onto Sweetwater County Road 4-17 (at sign that reads Petroglyphs, Sand Dunes, Boar’s Tusk). From here, you’ll be on improved dirt roads for about 22 miles to the site. After a few miles, bear left as County Road 4-17 turns north and County Road 4-18 continues east. As you drive, you can see the Wind River Mountain Range directly to the north and Boar’s Tusk will start to rise on the horizon. Continue straight past the sign for the White Mountain Petroglyphs, which is about 14 miles from U.S. 191. Stay on 4-17 for the next 6.5 miles, bearing right at the next intersection, following the signs toward the OHV Sand Dunes Play Area. Bear left as County Road 4-17 curves right, following BLM Road 4115. The Parking area is 1.5 miles along BLM 4115, at the top of a steep, curving hill.

From Lander: Approximate travel time is 2 hours, 45 minutes

From Lander, travel south U.S. 287, continuing on WY-28 across South Pass to Farson. After approximately 66 miles, turn left on US-191 south towards Rock Springs. Approximately 30 miles south of Farson, turn left onto Sweetwater County Road 4-17 (at sign that reads Petroglyphs, Sand Dunes, Boar’s Tusk). From here, you’ll be on improved dirt roads for about 22 miles to the site. After a few miles, bear left as County Road 4-17 turns north and County Road 4-18 continues east.
